Pyrgi

Pyrgi is a stunning medieval village on the Greek island of Chios. The village’s claim to fame is the beautifully decorated black and white motifs on the facade of the buildings. Take a walk around the main street and marvel at the architectural design and charming motifs that adorn the buildings. The motifs are known as xysta and are unique to this part of the Greek island. Visit the Agioi Apostoli temple, an excellent example of a Byzantine monument built between the 13th and 14th centuries. The temple is well known for its external wall paintings dating back to 1665 made by Cretan painter Antonios Domestichos. Head to the Virgin’s Assumption church built in 1694 and the Church of Taxiarchis built-in in 1680.
