Salgotarjan

Salgotarjan is a small town in the foothills of Karancs Mountain in Northeastern Hungary. The town is surrounded by scenic forests and hills. Visit the ruins of Salgo castle perched 625 meters above sea level. The 13th-century castle offers an excellent view of Salgotarjan and the surrounding area. Discover the intrinsic role played by the mining industry in the growth of Salgotarjan at the Mining Museum. The museum features details of the Nograd coal basin, technology of coal mining in the 19th century among others. Visitors also get the opportunity to see a section of mine and mining equipment. Visit Somosko castle situated above a hill and accessible from the Somosko village. The 13th-century castle is built of unconventional hexagonal basalt pillars and provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.
